"and if we casn arrange it the Bishops will in future have charge of the camp arrangements,, and will •appoint their own chaplains.,, Ef you can do anything to help inetj shall .be very glad. In any case, we must stick.toithe Camp Institutes next year, and go on with them for all we are worth.." (Applause). The following resolution.was carried : "That this conference, representing thirty-four branches of the Church ol England Men's Society, having taker. into consideration the matter of the Church of England services in camp considers that in order to avoid confusion and distress in future, the Bishop should he the senior Anglican chaplain in the diocese." It was-de-cided to forward the resolution to the Minister for Defence. JUDGE EDWARDS AND A JURY. Wanganui, May 29. A the Supremo Court to-day. a young man named Austin Henry Bruen, stood liis trial for the second tim< on charges of (1) attempting to carnally know a girl under sixteen years: (2) indecent assault; (3) common assault". 'After three hours' retirement, the jury returned with the following verdict:—Vot guilty of carnal knowledge, not guilty of indecent assault, but guilty of common assault. Mr'Justice Edwards declined to accept the verdict, on the ground that it was illogical. The jury retired for three-quarters of an hour, when the\ returned with the following verdict : Not guilty on the first count, disagreed on the second, and guilty on the third, with a recommendation to mercy. The Judge again declined to accept -uch a verdict. The jury once more n tired, and after a quarter of an liom returned with a verdict of not guilty on all counts. Judge Edwards, addressing Brue?-, .aid, "The jury has disbelieved yon. own statements, made on oath. 1 re commend von to be more careful, i'c ■ \ou may not find that another jni" will disbelieve you."
