Hampton is a village in Middlesex, twelve miles from London, on the line iof the London and South-Western ' Railway. Here is the magnificent palace of Hampton Court, founded by Cardinal Wolsey. It was enlarged by King Henry the VIII., who formed round it a large park. Edward VI. was born in the Palace, and Charles I. was for some time kept in confinement here. It was afterwards the occasional residence of Cromwell, Charles [I, and James 11. It was subsequently extended and improved by William lll.,'whose favorite residence it was. it contains a magnificent collection of historical portraits. In the garden, which is laid out in Dutch style, there is a maze which affords great amusement to visitors, who are very numerous at holiday times. Here there is a vine which is said to be the largest and most productive in Europe.
