By a gas explosion at Silkstone colliery, Wharncliire, eleven were killed.' The rescuers, after three hours' dangerous work, brought the injured men to the surface, hut most of them succumbed. The news caused the breaking up of cricket and other sports, followed by a wild stampede to the pithead.
