SHOT OUT OF A SHUTE.

AN INDIAN’S EXPERIENCE. During the run to Colombo of R.M.S. Marmora, on the morning of May 6, the third officer heard shouting in the water. Two lifebuoys were at once dropped, and the emergency boats launched. The shouting was again heard, and the starboard nxeboat was dropped in the water. The heat returned after picking up a native Indian, who soon revived under treatment. The native stated-that lie was employed in the capacity of coaltrimmer on board an Anchor line boat, and that at 11 a.m. on the previous day he had accidentally slipped through the shute, which was emptying ashes. For hours he kept himself afloat in shark-infested waters. He was twice attacked by ' these fish, and, when questioned as to how ho escaped, be replied that by splashing water and shouting he frightened them afvay.

He was handed over to the authorities at Colombo, who will eventually return him to his home in Cuttack.
