PERSONAL.

Mr H. M. Miller, an engineer connected with the Public Works Department, left Stratford this morning after having made inquiries regarding the recent electrocution fatality. /

Mr S. Saunders will retire from the position of editor of the Lyttelton Times on June 13, when lie will be succeeded by Mr M. Reading. Mr Edward Saunders, who has been as--sociate-editor of the paper during the past five years, will take the position of chief of staff.

Messrs A. H. Johnstone, chairman of the Western Taranaki Railway League, and E. Maxwell passed through by‘the, mail train for Wellington this morning, to confer with the Minister of Public Works in connection with the drafting of the proposed Bill to enable settlers to build the Opu-nake-New Plymouth railway.

At the Regan Street Methodist Hall last evening a very successful farewell social was given to Mr J. Nelson by the members of the congregation. The Rev. A. Reader occupied the chair, and the following programme was given Cornet solo, Mr C. H. Lawn; songs, by Miss N. Everiss, Mesdames E. W. Hancock, J. Richards, Messrs Kirkman, R.' Okey, and Rev. A. Reader; comic reading by Mr R. H. Nicholjs; recitations, Mr T. Kelvin and Miss E. A. Jackson; duets by Messrs Barker and Nelson and Messrs Kirkman and Nelson. During the evening the Rev. Reader, on behalf of the congregation, presented Mr f; Nelson with four handsomely hound volumes of Longfellow, Tennyson, Wordsworth and Bunyan’s works, . also a revised, version of the Bible. Messrs J. Masters and C. H. Lawn also spoke on behalf; of the congregation, choir, Christian Endeavour and Bible class members. Mr Nelson, in :ai few words, thanked the company for >the kind way in which ho. had been' treated, and also expressed regret at having to leave so many kind friends. An excellent supper was provided by the ladies, after which competitions and games were ,indulged in, and, the hearty gathering broke up by singing “Auld > Lang Syne.”
