UNWELCOME ALIENS.

The Nationalist Press of Russia is protesting just now at the influx of Chinamen into that country. For some time past there have been complaints from many Russian towns of the unwelcome presence of large numbers of Chinese pedlars and the characteristic defects of the lower order of the yellow race are painted in the most unattractive colors. »The Russian Far East has been teeming with cheap Chinese labor, and the action of the Governor-General of Amur territory in restricting any further engagement of Chinamen on public works is much praised; but these measures unfortunately have only had the effect of inducing the uninvited and irrespressible yellow guest to pene. trate westward into European Russia. Before the construction of the Siberian and Central Asian railways, Russia was safe from the incursion of this yellow element, with its concomitant spread of epidemic disease and undetectable crime. Now the Chinaman is everywhere conspicuous. He may be seen on all the streets of St. Petersburg. In Moscow there is not a tea shop without its Chinese visitors. The “Novoe Vremya,” in a special article on the subject, refers to the measures taken in other countries against Chinese emigrants, and calls for similar steps in Russia to put a stop to this dangerous Chinese movement.
