The contest between Bartlett (challenger), of Christchurch, and ' Lowe (holder), of Gisborne, for the professional heavy-weight boxing championship of New Zealand and a purse of £75, attracted an audience that filled the Opera House to overcrowding. Lowe weighed 11 stone 10 pounds.. and Bartlett 12 stone 2 pounds. It proved to be one of the most strenuous heavy-weight contests held in this district, although really heavy effective' hitting was not very prevalent. The contest ended at the close of the eleventh round, as a result of Bartlett giving up: on account of injured wrists, which had been troubling him since the fifth round, terribly burnt ' •; ■•. HOCKEY. The Stratford Hockey Club I,played their first match of the season) yesterday afternoon, against the Kaponga B, team, and considering it was the first match of the season, a very fast and interesting game resulted. Stiat-.foitl-showed better combination than their opponents, the final scores being : Stratford 6, Kaponga 5. The scores did not indicate the real merits of the Stratford team, who: had hard luck in misshig< several goals. The scorers for Stratford were Morgan Priest (3), Sargent, Foden and Syme.
