Mackenzie accompanied the Maoris on a visit to. Sir John Gorst, who is recruiting at Margate. There was an affecting meeting with Taingahawa, whose father saved Sir John’s life during the Maori War. ■ Mr Mackenzie to-day introduced the' Maoris to the Hon. L. V. Harcourt (Colonial Secretary), who promised to assist the party in securing an audience with the King on the understanding that it was purely a courtesycall, and that no grievances would be discussed. Mr Mackenzie explained the Constitutional position, and the Maoris now understand that Mr Harcourt and the King will receive them as bearers of historic names.
