LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The twenty-first anniversary social in connection with the local Salvation Army to be held to-night in the Army Hall* promises to be very successful and enjoyable. A fine programme has been arranged, and tickets are selling freely. While playing in a gravel pit near Palmerston yesterday some boys found the body of a newly-born female child floating in the water. The police were informed and an inquest was to be held to-day.—P-A. It does not at present look as if the sitting of the Court this week would last long. The only business set down for hearing consists of seven teen civil cases (one defended) and an application by a Territorial for exemption. A social to celebrate the twentyfirst anniversary of the local corps of the Salvation Army is to be held in the citadel this-evening. A good musical programme has been arranged, and addresses will be delivered by local clergymen and visiting officers. An enthusiastic meeting of Liberal . supporters at Dannevirke decided to form a branch of the New Zealand Liberal League with subsidiary branches throughout the Waipawa electorate. The Press Association states that when crystallised the opinion of the Party is to be obtained, and the candidate to contest the seat against Mr G. Hunter, sitting member, will be definitely selected. The Wellington Post says it is currently reported that the Government will shortly introduce legislation having for its* object the transforming of the three main city electorates into* one electorate returning three members. Mr Massey stated, in answer to a question, that he could not give a direct answer. An Electoral Bill would be brought down, but he could not divulge Cabinet secrets.

At the presentation to Mr W." L. Reading, the new editor of the Lyttelton Times, Sir Josepn Vv T ard took occasion to allude to the rumored amalgamation of the city constituencies, states the Press Association at Wellington. He said it would be nothing short of jerrymandering with the electoral law. He was strongly of opinion that proportional representation would be just as good for his party as any other, but if the Party which had temporarily control of the country's destinies tried to create a discriminative electoral law, it was wrong and improper. There should ho one system for the town and try alike. *He believed such an attempt would be resented by the people more than the Government imagined. The Prime Minister had said ho could give -no information, but surely everyone with a right to enrol also had a right to know at the earliest? moment what the conditions 4 of the system under which they voted were to be.
