SPORTING.
(By Cicero.) The Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter fixture, which opens to-morrow, and concludes bn Saturday, will introduce the cross-country season of 1914. The fields engaged both in numbers and class are excellent, and what is now wanted to make the meeting a success is fine weather. The Borough Handicap has attracted a number of fast sprinters. Should the going be at all good Postillion (for whom Kaniki has been withdrawn) will see a short price and will only have to reproduce Hawke’s Bay form to get a place. Wild Lupin is well at present, and showed a lot of pace at Egmont. Of the nine acceptors for the Hack Steeplechase Waterworks and Exotic ran £t Trentham. The display of both was good. The Wanganui Steeplechase has drawn thirteen acceptors, Bercola and Glenmore (12 stone) heading the handicap. Both are high-class fencers and are sure to keep the lighter weights busy. The Spaniard (11.10), is not badly treated. Of Sir Lethe and Kauroa (10.13), the writer prefers the latter. He is reported as being really well, and gave a taste of his quality over the same course last year. Jackman, who jumps well, reads best of the light weights over the Wanganui course, which is not by any means difficult. Cameron’s elect and Bercola should give a good account of themselves. Eleven appear on the list in the Kaitoke Hurdles. Aruake and Kurnalpi have both shown form recently and will have a large following. ■ The response from owners for the Century Hurdles was very poor, eight only paying the acceptance fee. Player ran a couple of sterling races at Hawke’s Bay, and is spoken of as a good one. Darby Paul ran really well at Egmont, and must have a chance. 1 The number engaged',, in the Connolly Handicap is not as large as in former years. Red Book has recent form to recommend, and will probably start favorite. Goldsize, if well, must have a chance. Twenty accepted for the Puma Hack. Princess Moutoa and Square Deal are fancied.
