Two prisoners named Maroney and Downey, who escaped from the Launceston gaol in March, were arrested at Albany and were returning by the steamer Indarra in charge of two constables. On the steamer entering the Bay, Downey complained of illness, and left the cabin in charge of a constable, Maroney and the other constable remaining, the door being closed but not locked. Maroney dashed out and the constable awoke and chased him round the decks. The fugitive snatched a lifebelt and jumped overboard. Meantime Downey made a desperate attempt to escape, but was overpowered and handcuffed. The steamer stopped and unavailingly searched. The jump was made four miles from land. I It is believed that Maroney was drowned.
