PERSONAL.
Madame Melba made a farewell appearance as "D'esdemona" at Paris. She starts for Australia soon, having cancelled several engagements, owing to her father's illness. She returns to Europe early in 1915, and then goes to America. Mr Allan J. Hill wa s on Saturday appointed secretary of the Stratford A. and P. Association, the general committee holding a meeting to decide on a successor to Mr W. B. Fearon, who has accepted the position of manager of Mr Newton King's Kaponga branch. Mr Hill was for some years in the Land Tax Department, Wellington, and latterly in the Valuation Department, Auckland. The death of Mrs Annie Quayle Townend is announced from Christchurch. The late Mrs Townsend was the only daughter of the late Mr G. H. Moore, of Glenmark, and the widow of the late Dr. Townend, of Christ-' church. The deceased lady, who led the most retired life, was chiefly known for her charitable works. She was one of the kindest and most humane of women, and was noted for her great benefactions. She was a most liberal contributor to charitable and deserving objects, in many cases anonymously. She was greatly beloved by all who knew her. The deceased lady was married in September, 1900, to Dr. Joseph Henry Townend, who died a few years later. She had been in ill-health for more than a fortnight past.
