The Commissioner of Taxes notifies that returns of Income Tax must be sent in on or before June 2nd. A man who was arrested in a helpless state of drunkenness at Ashburton on F riday on being searched was found to have a bank draft for £IOO in his possession. 'the first count of the votes in the Inglewood Queen contest (states the Record) showed the order to be as follows : —Miss Hawke (red), Miss Fabish (green), Miss Nesbit (red, white and biue), and Miss Death (blue). A final reminder is given of the address to be delivered at the Midhirst Public Hall this evening by Mr H. Atmore, M.P., one of the members of tbo “Flying Squadron.” Mr Atmore will also speak at Whangumomona tomorrow (Saturday) evening. Private advice from Wellington to-day states that Mr H. Poland, M.P., for Chinernuri, will be present with Mr Atmore at these meetings. Laurence Terry appeared at tbs Court this morning on charges of failing to obey an order of the Court for payment of maintenance of his wife and three children, the total arrears being £"l6 10s. After hearing a long statement from defendant, the case was adjourned for a week to allow of defendant producing a statement of his earnings since August last, when, the orders were made. The Inspector of Stock has iust returned from the Whanga district, where he has been on a visit of inspection for tiie last few days. In the course of his duties he destroyed six head of cattle as being more or less affected with tuberculosis, and also dealt with an outbreak of blackleg in the neighbourhood of Kohuratahi. Mr Becrc says the out-back country is remarkably free from disease at present, and the aim is to keep it so. Stock on the whole are looking well. Judgment by default was given in the following cases at the Court this morning:—James and Co. v. J. Kingsbeer, £1 4s Gd, costs ss; Same v. Cosgrove and Co., £4 5s lid, costs 10s; Smart Bros. v. B. G. King, £8 Is 3d, costs £1 3s 6d; X.Z.L. and M.A. Co. v. Robert Parkes, £7 Is Gd, costs £1 13s Gd. In the judgment summons case T. L. Paget v. Albert Cameron, judgment debtor did not appear and an order was made for the payment forthwith of £1 ss, in default seven clays’ imprisonment.

As an instance of the virility of blackleg, a recent visitor to Kohuratahi states that the other day a dog got at the carcase of a calf that had died from the disease, and almost immediately afterwards bit the hocks of another calf whilst the owner was mustering the animals for the purpose of removing them to another paddock. The result was a direct inoculation of the trouble to the healthy animal, and its death resulted next day.
At the Court this morning Mrs A. Gooch was fined 10s, with costs 7s, for allowing five cows to wander on a Borough road. Alfred Devaintor pleaded guilty to having on May 4th put seven horses on a ro-d for the purpose of depasturing. Defendant: I was driving them to the paddock. The S.M. : And let them stand for a while to keep down the grass? Defendant : No, I went inside for a minute. A fino of 10s with costs 7s was imposed. J. King was fined 20s with costs 7s for driving u gig without lights in Warwick Road on May 4th. The S.M. remarked on the possibility of a charge of manslaughter which might easily arise from an accident caused through a vehicle being driven Without lights. For riding a bicycle on a footpath Herbert Allen was fined ss, with costs 7s.

Mr Frank John Lundou, an old respected resident of Waimate (5.1.), died suddenly, late last night (states the Press Associaion). He had been attending a St. Patrick Club social, and left the hall to go home about 12 y o’clock. Others leaving shortly after found deceased lying on the footpath. They took him in a motor car to a doctor’s, when life was found to bo extinct. Deceased was aged 59. Heart disease is supposed to be the cause of death.
