RACES AT HAWERA. Fair weather prevailed for the opening of the Egniont Winter Meeting yesterday. There was a largo attendance, the amount at the gates being slightly under that taken on the first day of last year. The stipendiary stewards, Messrs McMahon and Gordon were in attendance, and dealt with quite a number of minor matters, cautions being extended to some riders, while other matters were held over until to-day. The sum of £14,900 was put through the totalisators as against £11,252 for the corresponding day of last year, which showed an increase of £3618.

The Pahiatua Racing Club, an oldestablished institution which was deprived of its permit three yearg ago, held a non-total isator meeting today. • The weather was fine and the attendance large.
