"Fairy-like Grandeur."

WORLD’S FAIR AT ’FRISCO,

PROGRESS OF THE WORK*

Remarkable progress is/being made in constructing tbo numerous gigantic buildings on the San Francisco Panama Pacific Exposition Grounds (writes the San Francisco correspond, ent of the Sydney Daily Telegraph under date April 7). All the largo palaces arc rapidly nearing completion, seven of them already having the main structures finished. The immense wooden buildings now have a covering of ornamental plaster, the roofs are of brick-red, and the dozen domes of the main building are colored with a pale “art” green. At mid-day with a brilliant sunshine and the delightful grouping of the buildings and with hills towering in the distance, the scene presented is one of fairy-like grandeur.

The Loss of Life. Tlio only regrettable circumstance of the erection of the palaces is the loss of 37 lives through accidents at various stages of the construction, but, considering that some 2000 to 3000 men are engaged on the grounds, the toll of deaths is not worse than previous World's Fairs' constructions. Union wages are being enforced by the men throughout. Canada's Great Display.

Canada’s exhibition will be the most * \ elaborate ever attempted by that Government, and one of the foremost on the Exposition grounds. Plan* for a 300,000 dollar pavilion to house the display have been approved and work is now being pushed ahead with all possible speed. The building will be 340 feet long, 240 feet wide, and 60 feet high, and will cost 300,000 dollars. ' The estimates for Canada’s exhibits stipulate an expenditure of 600,000 dollars. Practically the entire exhibit of Canada at the recent Ghent Exposition is en route to San Francisco for the big 1916 show.

Striking Naval farads. Nine Governments, including most of the great Powers, have decided to send naval contingents to participate in the naval parade, from Hampton Roads to the Golden Gate, via the Panama Canal, which is expected to signalise the opening, of , the Exposition next February. Navy Depart* ment officials, who are.arranging the programme, think this, number will he trebled before, mid-summer. Argentine, Cuba, France,* Germany, Great Britain, I.taly, Japan, Portugal, and Russia are the "nine countries promising naval representation, and the latest added to the list, Austra' Ha, has designated three ships, which will join the 100 or more bat* tleships to assemble at Hampton Roads for the memorable voyage in the pageant of sea-fighters of th» world to,San Franciseb. '

New Zealand's Efforts, Interest is growing daily in the preparations being made by the Dominion of New Zealand in connection with participation in the San Francisco Exposition. Commissioner Edmund Clifton, the New Zealand Government special representative, is actively engaged at the Californian metropolis organising preliminary arrangements, which foreshow that New Zealand will rank in the forefront of the nations of the world whoso flags will fly at San Francisco in 1915. Tentative plans were formulated in New Zealand by the Government authorities, but on the arj rival of Commissioner Clifton at San Francisco the local situation was carefully surveyed, with the result that several modifications were found necessary and recommendations were accordingly made by Mr Clifton to the New Zealand authorities. Preliminary plans were made for a suitable pavilion in which to house the exhibits. "Word is now being awaited from the Dominion Government, according to Mr Clifton, who stated that he expects to obtain permission shortly to proceed with the erection of the national building and the preparation of the grounds surrounding it. Mr Clifton has received advices from Now Zealand that a Fervent desire exists there to participate in the New Zealand section of the World's Fair, and gratification is expressed in San Francisco that a representative commission has been created in New Zealand, comprising commercial men, manufacturers, and farmers, who will severally forward recommendations to their various branches of 1 industry, describing the advantage of concurrence in the San Francisco historical event of next year, and provide some indications of the lines upon which it would appear most desirable to provide displays. This commission will also afford assistance in the selection of the exhibits that will bo sent out by the Dominion of New Zealand for its national building. As far as can ho gathered, Now Zealand is further ahead in this, respect than any of the other numerous' nations that have announced! their intention of participating in tho Exposition. The ground that has: been allocated to New Zealand adjoins that of Denmark and Italy, and on the opposite side is the extensive site for France's display. The locale of the New Zealand pavilion and grounds is one of the -finest in tlm foreign nations section, and directly overlooks the vast Bay of San Francisco."
