"FEAR GOD AND HONOR THE KING."
The manner in which the motto of the new public 'Bobooi -at New Lynn, Auckland—" For God and Honor, the Sing”—came to be finally chosen is interesting. At the spoiling ceremony :■ on Saturday afternoon the schoolmaster (Mr M. J. S'. Eliis) stated that it was originally'suggested by one, of the C'uklven, arid the committee decided that no more ant, words could be found. It ■ h<ipnened. however, that this was also the motto of tho warship ■ -New UaaJahd. ■ that “before it could be used by- {’i-- it was necessary to obtain tht cOhsqnt of the coiriman-. ■ dor,. Captain Halsey; Accordingly be was conunatiiCiitod 'witb; and in bis roi)ly, .(.-vivtun. on hoard the battleship, a; r.er, between Jamaica and-the Bcvxaudas. fi'-ntarnHalsey :>a-ys: “I are sure 1,, at I arn voicing, the ooinion of the c:';-.end nmn, of>];;ia ship when I that they, will bo-very pleased to ' think that the motto, God'and. If the children carry out that cs a motto for their . lives, they will always be true citizens - of* the Empire.” Ag.a valuable sou-, vcr.ii’’ the letter is, to be. framed andhung in the school building.
