The Duke of Argyll was in indifferent health for two years, but recently improved and made many public appearances, cli icily for charity- Alter his relapse on Friday, his condition was hopeless. His end was peaceful. The Duchess nursed him throughout. The best known of all the Scottish Peers, perhaps, was the Duke ol Argyll, who, as Marquis of Lome, leo i„ 11... altar Princess Louise of Eng-

As the head of the , Clan Campbell," the Duke occupied the proudest position among the Highland lords, for his family was the most widely and nobly connected of any in the three kingdoms, not excepting the Hamiltons, and Ids titles would take as long in reciting as those of the Prince of Wales himself. Born in 1815, he went to Eton, thence to St. Andrews, and finished at Trinity College, Cambridge. He early took an active share in volunteer military service, first becoming Lieutenantcolonel commandant of the First Argyll and Bute Artillery, and was honorary colonel of several fine volunteer and militia regiments. He found a political life agreeable also, and he represented Argyllshire as a Liberal from 18(58 to 1878, but failed to got in for Hampshire in 1885. He sat for South Manchester as a Liberal Unionist from 1895 to 1900, when lie succeeded Ids father as Ninth Duke, and he was for five years GovernorGeneral for Canada. So powerful a Peer must needs have many territorial responsibilities, and he was invested with the duties of, among other positions, the Hereditary Master of the King’s Household in Scotland, Admiral of the Western Isles, Lord Lieutenant of several counties; he was a Privv Councillor,, and a Knight of the Thistle, G.C.M.G., G.C.V.0.. and was Councillor of the" Order of St. Michael and St. George. The heir-presumptive is Lord Archibald Campbell, his brother.
