ATTACKED BY THE SEA.
HOKITIKA ALARMED. [Pee Peesb Association. 1 Hokitika, May 1. The position on the sea front continues to cause considerable alarm. The spring tides have been remarkably smooth, “otherwise the disaster if a fortnight ago would have been repeated with worse results. 'The sea continues to encroach on lie veil street -daily, and during the last few tides considerable erosion lias taken place, low-water mark being upwards of 60 feet closer inshore and very deep water along the sea front. The protective works being carried m by the Public Works Department comprise driving a series of piles Bft. apart straight to sea. These are being planked partly. Very slow progress is being made; only about 20 piles have/been driven, 10 to 15ft deep, in the last ten days. Considerable comment has been made on the slow progress and the manner in which the danger is being grappled with. A borough official gives the opinion that unless more urgent stops are taken to secure the sea. front, if rough “weather eventuates, greater damage is bound to bo caused.
