INAUGURAL SUPPER.

j WHANCA P.W.D.C.C. [ A most successful supper- and concert took place at the Public Hall on Friday, when about 70 members and friends sat down to a supper and pleasant evening. Mr Robert Hill (overseer) was in the chair, supported by Mr T. Bradley, J.P., and Mr J. Mc- | Donald and Mr R. Wilson (assistant | overseer) in the vice chair. Mr J. Roos presided at the piano. After supper toasts were right heartily and musically received. "The Public Works Department" was proposed by Mr T. Bradley, who said ho pleased to find such a fine lot of workmen as the P.W.D. men were, and. lie thought the Department might ho proud of them, for he found th'jfl gentlemen and good sports. Mr R. Hill, in response, said the Public Works Department were responsible for the railways, roads, public buildings, etc., and opened up the country, thereby addjng to its pros- I perity, and opening up a field for labor and industries, which would not otherwise be, and it was agreed that they Wore a revenue producing Department, and in all probability Whangamomona would not be where it was, were it not for. the same. i

"The Cricket Club" was responded to by Messrs Hatton, Armstrong, McMeekin, and C. Little, who in a neat little speech, suggested that cricket was the king of British sports, but football was a great queen partner, and perhaps Whanganiomona would not win the Taranaki cup this year, but would have a good try. Mr A. Klee (on behalf of the donor, Mr J. Rothery) presented the cup, and said the record—Played 6, won o, lost I—was a good record, and one that would be hard to beat in the Dominion, and that the unity among the players was the solution of their success.

Mr J. Ingle, also in response, said if any club could excel the above recordj they would be pleased to hand over the cup to a better team. The following medals were presented: For all round merit, Mr C. Little ; bowling average, Mr J. Ingle: most improved player, Mr McKaue. In reponse to "Local Industries" Mr F- Lundon said sport was very essential' for the backblock setler and created an espirit de corps, which made life in the backblocks more endurable.

Mr D. Wildermoth said the leg before wicket theory had never been properly solved, but in football the referee, very decisively decided any infringement of the game. Other toasts were musically honored and interspersed were some good songs rendered by the following: Messrs E. Keighloy, J. Ross, A. Hill, D. Brown. A. McMeekin, Chas. Melbourne, Jack Creak, Horace Spear, 0. O'Lansen, each of whom received an encore. A pleasing and diverting item was a representation of a Maori haka, per formed by Mr Lew King and F Keighley. In the "wee sraa' hours" of the morning, one of the most successful gatherings came to a conclusion. Special thanks are due to Messrs J. Rogers (secretary), McMeekin, J. Peterson and C. Little.
