Danger Signals.
EXETER RAILWAY SMASH, THE DRIVER ON TRIAL. [By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] [United Press Association.] (Received 9.50 a.ni.) Sydney, April 28. The trial of .Peter Irwin, the driver of the train in the Exeter smash, on a charge of feloniously slaying Bray, one of the victims, has commenced. Accused exhausted his right to challenge. The case hinges on the position of the signals. Counsel intimated that the defence would be that the distant signal showed green and that the fog was too thick to allow the driver to see the red light at the home signal. A night officer gave evidence that there was no fog, but that it was misty. Ho could see the back lights, indicating that both signals were at danger. If it was a green signal no back light would show. Other witnesses gave evidence that there was a dense fog. The case has been adjourned.
