MacArthur is the new State chess champion of New South Wales, states a cablegram to-day. ■ • Vice-Admiral, Stoke, newly-appoint-ed to a command in Ireland, -died suddely at Queenstown. Mr G. Seifert left Palmerston on Friday for London, in order to b© present at the sculling race on the Thames for the - championship of the world between Barry and Paddon (of Australia). Mr Seifert is the latter’s backer.
