Frank Lawton, who was a prominent whistler some years ago on the English stage, has died m poverty. The death is announced of Mr S. R. Crbckett, M.A., the novelist, aged 54 years. Sir William Pickford has been appointed Lord Justice of the Court of Appeal, in succession to Sir R. L. B. Vaughan Williams, resigned. Dr. T. J. Hughes, Medical Inspector of Schools in the Auckland District, has been appointed assistant to the Health Officer at Auckland. The Emperor of Austria's health is improving. A cablegriua" ro-\Uy-states that /the fever is and "is strength is being- maintained. The Emperor will be 84 years of age on August 18.

The marriage of Mr Arnold Gottfred Kaspar, of Midhirst, and Miss Mildred Pauline Steckel, also of Midhirst, was celebrated yesterday at the Stratford Methodist Church, the Rev. Reader officiating.

Miss Ella.G. King has resigned her £ position at the Stratford School, and in tendering her resignation to fclie School Committee she wrote: "I wish to take this opportunity of thanking the-headmaster, Mr fyrer, for his un r remitting: kindness to me during the time; I have been in this school, and I also wish to thank the.members.of the present and past committees for the courtesy and kindness I havo always received at. their hands." In his report,- presented at last night's meeting of the School .Committee, the, headmaster remarked.: "Miss King is resigning her position as assistant mistress in this school. She has been in the-school for a long time, having first joined as a little girl in the infant room. Miss King passed successfully through the primary school, secondary school and pupil teachership, and became one of our strongest and ablest teachers. She has gained a very fine "'school record, and will be greatly missed." The resignation was accepted with regret and it was decided that the Committee present' a framed address to Miss King.
