In a private letter received in 'Wellington, Jockey Hector Gray, writing under date March 31, says that Wallalo was to ho a runner in the eventful race, but lie did not like him as the distance was too short, and he further remarked that ho was no sprinter, hut a rare stayer. He gave him a good chance in the Autumn Stakes, one mile and a half, hut even that, he thought, might ho a trifle short for him. He concludes as follows:—“But let them look out for him in the Sydney Cup, for over that last half-mile lie is a marvel.”

Mr Eccles, in a statement made to the Sydney “Sun,” alleges his complete innocence of the charges under which Wallalo was disqualified’ and continued: “At the inquiry, Mr Rouse said that three and a half furlongs from home Wallalo made a forward move and ran into third or fourth position. Gray, the jockey, denies this, and says that lie was never nearer than sixth till just before the finish. This was corroborated by other jockeys who rode in the race, and who gave evidence. 1 had my glasses on the horse, any say that at the time Mr House says ho was third or fourth lie was no nearer than sixth . My instructions to the jockey were: ‘This is qnly a mile race, and the horse may be tailed off. Keep as close to the field as possible.’ 1 backed the horse to win £7OO beside the stake. M’Grath, the trainer, backed him to win £IOO. J took £SOO to £ls in one bet, and offered to take £IOOO to £3O, but was refused. 1. think Mr, House’s assertion that the horse was third or fourth three and a half furlongs from home was due to a mixing up of the colors on bis part. Secrete was in that position at that stage, and his colors are very similar to those of Wallalo. Wallaby’s colors are green, pink sleeves and rod cap, while those of Secrete are green, yellow sleeves and black i cap. Mr House mistook the horses. I have had considerable experience of racing, and it would have been simply madness on my part to pull the horse in a minor engagement just prior to the running of an important race worth £5OOll, and for which my horse was a pronounced favorite. And then he was engaged in several valuable weight-for-age events. Ihe horse was honestly run to win. Certainly I did not hack him heavily -the reason heI ing that while lie is a proved stayer, i I was of opinion that a mile was per- ; haps too short for him.” I New Zealand horses won £1733 at the Autumn Meeting stall's a Sydney cablegram. At the yearling sales, on account of Mr G. M. Currie, TCoalai mm, a Flavius Alhura filly fetched 150 guineas.
