An Auckland Press Association message states: Elizabeth Darby, proprietress of the Balmoral Private Hotel which was recently raided by the police, who seized a large quantity of liquor, appeared at the Police Court charged with selling liquor without a license. The police alleged that Mrs Darby did a largo trade selling liquor Lo her own boarders. Defendant, a £dow, admitted the offence, and explained that "the boarders formed a syndicate for the purchase of it, and she served it out to them, paying the money received into the syndicate fund. She herself got no profit out of the sale She had difficulties with creditors, and the bailiffs were now in the house. The Bench said the breach of the law was not a very grievous one. Defendant was fined £lO and costs.
