George Mitchell, the English examatour boxer, who challenged George Carpentior, met the Frenchman here and was beaten in the first round. He won a wager for withstanding Carpentier longer than “Bombardier” Wells did. Mitchell showed great pluck. He was knocked down four times by hard jaw punches before his seconds threw in the towel. The light lasted ninetyfive seconds.

In the semi-final of the championship yesterday afternoon, Pearce beat R. J. Brown 7—5, 6—o. Pearae and Brown meet in the final on Saturday.
