The Civil Service Commission, in the course of a voluminous repent, recommends the retenti on of fhe competitive entrance examinations, and the payment of women to approximate that of men where the same v.oi k is performed with equal efficiency, but the men’s salaries to be Higher when efficiency is greater; and the report urges that marriage demands the retirement of women from the service, because its responsibilities ato normally incompatible with the devotion of their whole time to the public service.

London, April-, 14 At the teachers’ conference, M ss Croxon moved for equal pay for men and women, assorting that girls, as future mothers of the race, are eve r y whit as important as the corning fathers. A man interjected: “Drop this sd’y psychological drivel.” Another remarked: “Teaching is rapidly becoming a woman’s profession. 1 The male teacher will soon be as extinct as the dodo.” The proposal was defeated by an overwhelming majority.
