The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 15, 1914. THE AMERICAN CUP.

The United States, or rather that groat proportion of its public which takes the keenest interest in the international yachting contest, is apparently satisfied that Britain’s representation means business, and! [that there will ho a right worthy con- } . * jtest for the America Cup this year. Nothing is therefore to be left to chance by the Americans in the effort to retain possession of the much-de-sired trophy. The latest news from I Now York is to the effect that three Cup defenders are being built. The plan of constructing three or four models to race against each other, in order to select the best craft to pit against the Britisher, is generally approved, and all the resources of wealth and the art of racing machine designing are being called upon to ks«p the honored piece of plat a on the western side of the Atlantic, TJi®

Herroshoff yacht which is being built for the New York Yacht Club syndicate, was to have had a centreboard, but this plan has now been altered, and the big cutter will be a keel vessel. The two other American yachts are the Defiance, building at Bath for a syndicate, and the Lawley-built cutter, which has been designed by William Gardener for Mr A. S. Cochran. The latter craft is to bo plated with manganese bronze, and is expected to put up a record in tiie matter of cost. The Defiance is to have about sixty-five tons of lead on her keel, which will enable her to carry an immense spread of canvas. Not a great deal has been permitted to leak out regarding Sir Thomas Liptoii’s latest challenger, though it is understood she will be able to easily outclass the gallant old Shamrock. It is expected that the three defender yachts will have a match to decide which shall be pitted against Britain’s best at the end of the present month, and this preliminary event is being looked forward to with great interest by sportsmen all over the world.
