HOSPITAL BOARD.
MONTHLY MEKTINC. The monthly meeting of the Hospital Board was helcHthis morning, when there wore present: Messrs J. .McAllister (chajrman), C. D. Sole, A. Meredith, 15. Walter, B. Bine, J. Christoffel and J. Smith. Mr \Y. Rogers forwarded an apology for absence. REPORTS. The Medical Superintendent (Dr. Steven) reported: Oaring March twenty patients were admitted, seventeen discharged and there were no deaths, so that fourteen remained at the end of the month. Eight operations were performed under anaesthetices Miss O'Brien returned lroni hoUday |on March sth. Dr. T C. Krascr acted as Medical Superintendent during my absence from March sth to 19th. The Matron (Miss O'Brien) reported • Xurses Condon and Helton passed their examination in physiology and anatomy, which was held last month. 1 wish to recommend that some alterations be made to the dry-ing-room furnace. The Gardener reported: There is nothing special to report. The lawns are in good order and the vegetables are plentiful and healthy. The Health Inspector reported: Infections diseases—Three cases of scarlet fever and one of chicken-pox wore notified in Stratford Borough. Two of the scarlet fever cases were removed to hospital, and the premises disinfected. The other case is isolated at home. The case of chicken-pox is isolated at home, and precautions are, being taken against spread of disease. One suspected case of scarlot fever was notified from Whangamomona County. The patient is isolated at home, and the usual precautions are being taken. One. suspected ease of typhoid fever was removed to hospital from Stratford County and the premises disinfected. The patient has been discharged from hospital, as the case proved to be not one of typhoid fever. One case of infantile paralysis was notified ' in Stratford County. The premises were disinfected after the patent had been isolated for the usual period. General:—Stratford Borough: One. occupier of premises was advised re destruction of rats. Three fish shops were inpected, and in one case a sanitary defect was remedied. Three butchers' shops were inspected, and in one instance the work of complying with, new regulations has been completed. The fruit shops and marts were inspected. Stratford County: Two butchers' shops and one school were inspected. Whangamomona County: One hotel was inspected, and')the-licensee was asked to have defect remedied. Two boarding houses, one butcher's shop, one bakehouse, one fruit shop and livery stables were inspected. Mr Sole reported on' behalf of the Visiting Committee that the grounds were in good order," and that the gravel recently put down was settling down well.
WHANCAMOMONA HOSPITAL. Mr Hill, postmaster, at Kohtiratahi, telegraphed as follows under date March 30th: General sites offered near Kohuratahi railway station for cottage hospital. Mr Meredith reported that he had inspected proposed sites for a cottage hospital at Whangamomona. There was only one suitable in Whangamoniona, on .Prospect Road. The settlers had previously, moved in the matter, and the Commissioner of Crown Lands had suggested that there should be no difficulty in having the land made over to the Board. It would be just as well to have a site in each settlement, so that when the hospital was built it could be put 'up where the bulk of population was. It was possible that Kohuratahi woidd in time become the bigger centre of population. The site in Whangamomona was close to the residence of the new doctor. At tin; next meeting of the Whangamomona County Council he would move to ask that the land be vested in the Board. It was decided to request Mr Hill to forward to the Board written offers of sites and to ask Mr Meredith to move in his Council to have the Whangamomona site vested in the Board.
GENERAL. The action of the Visiting Committee in accepting Mr N. J. King's tender of £499 10s for additions to the hospital was confirmed. The chairman presented a balancesheet of the past year's operations, showing that the year was started witli a credit balance of £157 lis Bd, and finished with a credit balance of £71:5 7s ,od. Tenders for supplies were accepted as follows:—Groceries Co-opera-tive Store; bread, Co-operative Store; meat. Mr T. I). Colson; milk. Mr L. 11. Xeal. The tender of Mr (,'. H. Wilson was accepted for undertaking work. The Secretary presented the following statement of contributions for the coming year: Stratford County £233 Ms (capital expenditure), £552 7s (ordinary); Stratford Borough £55 4s and £l3O 9s; Wliangamomona County £55 4s and £l3O Bs. * The Health Inspector wrote that a whare in Miranda Street was in bad repair and seemed to be used l, v rugrants for shelter. He recommended that the owner he asked to put the building in repair and to have it closed against vagrants. The following estimates of expenditure for the current year were presented by the Secretary:— Capital expenditure £'B77, less receipts £IBB IGs, net expenditure £C,SS 4s. capital expenditure apportioned amongst contributory authorities £3ll 2s, subsidy
£314 2s, other than capital expenditure £2950, less receipts £1313 8s Bd, net £1630 lis 4d, apportioned among contributory bodies £Bl3 Is, subsidy £823 7s Id. The Valuer-General forwarded a letter setting out the capital rateable values of the contributory districts as follows:—Straford County £2 > 040,0n', Whangamomona County Council £481,915, Stratford Borough £480,123, total £3,002,645. The Government statistician forwarded the population, as follows :—Stratford County 5973, Stratford Borough 3015, Whangamomona County'#l9l4, Maoris 51, total 10,953.
