BOWLING.
THE STRATFORD CLUB.
(By P. Steward.)
The Pihama Club put up a performance yesterday which may be claimed easily, as a record for the Dominion, if it be not -one unique in the annals of the bowling world from a dub point of view. Though there are altogether only eighteen ■ members in the Club, whose grounds are ■situate from Stratford some twenty miles, every member put in an appearance to try conclusions with the local truhdlers/ To make up five rinks, thev enlisted the services ol two fellow-bowlers from the domain of nowhere, and despite the threatening weather several of the team were in Stratford before nine, o'clock in the (morning. That one rink did not turn up until after eleven was not its fault, as. it is understood, the arrangements for the motor car were not fulfilled by the , chauffeur. These players were profuse in their apologies, but, like the true sports Pihama are,'the result of the few heads played 'with them made no difference to the result, as .the points finished a tie! The day proved a very enjoyable outing for all, and luck again favored the brave, as the weather held up sufficiently to allow of play not being interrupted all day. As to the play, the locals won both the morning and afternoon matches somewhat comfortably—in the morning by 31 points, and in the afternoon by 33.
The following are the scores in the morning contest, Stratford being mentioned first in each rink:— Bickerton, R. Masters, McMillan, Smart (s) 17 v. Hougan, Riley, R. Lambie, McHardy (s) 15. The usual hospitality. ,was extended to the .visitors, it appeared to meet with their approbation, judging froni the" highly complimentary .re-, marks passed by their spokesman, Mr It. Lambie; sen., at the conclusion of play. Mr Lambie said they had come up for a game for the fun of it, and i they had not beeir disappointed. He extended an invitation to Stratford to meet Pihama on their own green this season, if possible, but, if not, next season "living or well, but whether or no, you'will all, be welcome." (Cheers and laughter.) The ladies were not forgotten either, as the visitors gave them a hearty cheer for the attention shown. ' 'Mr Smart (the ChibJs vice-president) briefly replied, his remarks being summed up in.the! phrase: "We are glad you have come." The single-handed bowling championship of Australia was won by Mr Waxman, of Victoria, states a Brisbane cablegram.
