Second Edition. HOKITIKA’S SEA FRONT.
ENCROACHMENT OF THE WAVES [Per Press Association.] ' Hokitika, April 8. An inspection of the sea-front at Hokitika to-day discloses a very serious position as the result of last night’s gale and heavy sea. From fifty to one hundred feet of the bank has been carried away, together with buildings and fences. The damage amounts to a considerable sum. Other damage by the gale includes the unroofing of a portion of the Racing Club’s main grandstand, while fences and trees suffered to a great extent. RESIDENTS alarmed. FURTHER ENCROACHMENT. Hokitika, April 9. Further sea encroachments at the rear of Hevell Street continue. To-day the waves are dashing against business premises and doing continued damage. ' McKay’s large drapery establishment in the centre of the town is wrecked. AA r avcs are finding their way repeatedly into Re veil’s and other premises near by have also been damaged. Business people are busy removing their goods. An enormous sea is running, causing great consternation, and furtlioi increased damage is feared to-night, as the deep water is now much closer inshore.
