CHEAPER BREAD.
The bakers of Stratford have reduced the price of bread by one penny per 41b loaf as from to-day, but, in view of the fact that flour has recently risen in price, the cause for this is probably attributable to a keener competition in trade, and one leading baker pessimistically states that this reduced price cannot, owing to the cost of distribution, increased wages, and other trade expenses, last for long, and can only be regarded as a temporary “catch” for more trade. For this we are truly, sorry. tv hen bread at present in the cities is Bd, and the cost of delivery is not so great, population being confined to a closer area, readers will realise that bakers, like other tradesmen, have to pay their way and live. But from whatever cause, the thrifty housewife will welcome the cheaper bread-loaf and hope devoutly it may never rise again in price.* We fear this is a vain hope.
