IN STEAMER'S HOLD.

[Pee Peess Association.] Wellington, March 31

A middle-aged man, named Thomas Caldwell, whose' home is at Pefcone, was killed in the forehold of the steamer Matai this morning. The vessel was lying at Jervois Quay discharging superphosphate from a northern port when a sling containing eight bags broke, and the fell back into the hold, a distance of 35 or 40 feet. Some struck Caldwell, killing him instantly. A man named E. Bindley, who was working alongside Caldwell, escaped with a slight injury to his shoulder.
