Mr A. E. Lawrence, editor of the West Coast Times, lias accepted an appointment as managing editor of the North Otago Times,
Mr Whitson, secretary or the Union Steam Ship Company is retiring, after 35 years’ connection with the company.
K The King of Italy entertained the Kaiser at luncheon in Venice. The populace warmly welcomed the sovereigns, states a Times— Sydney, Sun cablegram , from Rome.
Constable and Mrs Scannell, of
Whangamomona, returned last evening from Rotorua, and proceed to • Whangamomona to-morrow. Constable Scannell takes up his duties on Monday.
Mr T. C. Fookes, who recently left Stratford on a visit to England, has now left Sydney in prosecution of Iris journey. A private letter from Mr Fookes, received in Stratford a day • or two ago, stated that he and Mrs Fookes had arrived safely in Australia and had spent a pleasant time in Sydney. Under date March 17th Mr Fookes wrote cheerfully of his departure for Europe on the following day. Among other things Mr Fookes said that he had had a gobd time with members of the Sydney Bowling Club.
The funeral yesterday at New Plymouth of the late Mi' John French, a Maori war veteran, who died on Tuesday at the age of 71 years, wqs attended by a number of his former comrades (states the News). Tho deceased was a member of Major Atkinson’s Bushrangers, and just 50 years ago took part in the assault on Kaitake, in Captain Good’s company. The remains were conveyed to their last resting-place by the deceased’s comrades, the coffin being enshrouded in the flag which he had fought under in the Maori war. Bugler Walker sounded the “Last Post.”
