A SHOOTING AFFRAY.

George Havelock Green, who was arrested at Auckland about three weeks ago, on a charge oi : disobeying an order for the maintenance oi ins wife and children, and brought to - Dunedin, went down to Sawyer’s Bay cnis afternoon, wnere his wire is engaged as housekeeper to Air Perry, currier. He called at the house at about 3.30, and apparently, fired two or tnree shots at her, all of which took affect about the neck and shoulders. Green walked to Port Chalmers, where ne was arrested by Constable O’Shea at about 4 p.ni. Mrs Green was attended by Dr. Borrie, of Port Chalmers, but from what little can be gathered at present, it does not appear that the wounds are critical.
A SPANISH SWINDLE. ( Wellington, March 22. The Government has received from the Colonial Office a communication warning New Zealanders against the operations of a Continental gang which is Working what is known as the Spanish swindle, in which a proposal is made to transfer to the dupe a fortune and a military prisoner in Spain on receipt of £IOO. Wanganui, March 22,
The Wanganui Carnival, which closed last night, proved an astonishing success. The election of the Queen of the Carnival realised about £I2OO, while the afternoon and evening fetes yesterday brought the total to over £2OOO.
ROSS GOLD MINE.
Hokitika, March 22,
The Ross gold mine was flooded oi Saturday, owing to a break in the water-race, and this interfered with the working of the hydro-electric plant The Diesel engine was set in motion, but it was found that'fhe. water supply for cooling the engine was cut off, and it became necessary to draw the pumps; This ’ was carried out successfully, and in addition to securing two motors, one' starter was also brought to the surface. I Repairs are being effected to the race, and operations will be resumed in a few .days. ’ •
THE PREMIER’S TOUR.
Hokitika, March 22
The Hon. W. F. Massey, the Prime Minister, delivered a political speech hero on Saturday night. A motion of thanks'and confidence'' in the present government was carried M r Majssey was cheered at the conclusion of, his,v speech. Subsequently he was entertained hy! the members of the Westland branch' of the Reform League. \ , . ' 1 . On Saturday the Premier visited the Kokatahi aiid [ Kaiterangi districts.,, During the day be met a number .-of deputations with regard to local requirements. He was entertained .by the settlers, who gave him a most enthusiastic reception. To-day Mr Massey attended a ceremony of laying the foundation-stone of St. Mary’s Church. Bishop Grimes officiated, and it was an impressive ceremony. To-morrow he proceeds t.o Ross and returns to Hokitika in the evening, when he will be entertained by the local bodies at a social gatheiing. Ho will leave Hokitika for Christchurch on Tuesday morning.
HON. FISHER'S OPPONENTS.
Pongaroa, March 22
The Hon. F. M. B. Fisher arrived at Pongaroa, via Eketahuna, oil baturday night, accompanied by Messrs 11. J. Holmes, Chief Government Marine Engineer, Sykes and Escott, M’s.P. He was depntationised and banqnetted, and given a hearty reception by a large gathering. He said that the fanatics, who had determined that lie should not be heard in Wellington, had to him since anonymously, intimating that neither Mr Herdman nor himself would be hoard until after the elections were over. He said he had been practically howled down by about 150 degenerates, by whom the meeting was controlled. But this would have the opposite effect to that intended by the Red Feds, and would strengthen the position of the Government. The Minister proceeded to-day to Akitio, and returns to-morrow •to deliver a political address here. With Mr Holmes, the Hon. F. M. B. Fisher inspects the Aohanga and Akitio rivers, relative to harbor schemes.
