A TRAIN ACCIDENT.
WAGGONS LEAVE THE RAILS. LPer Press Association.] Wellington, March 23. A narrow escape from a serious train accident occurred on . Friday night, near Thorndon, when the train which arrives in Wellington at 10.45 p.m., was partly derailed. The train comprised 27 waggons and three passenger cars. When the viaduct over the Hutt Road was reached, a series of jolts and jars indicated that something was amiss. The brakes were immediately applied, when it was found that four or five trucks had left the rails and were badly damaged. The accident was due to the door of one of the trucks being wrenched off by coming into contact with a beam of the bridge, lifting the truck bodily off the rails and derailing the three following trucks. The fore part of the train. proceeded to the station. A gang of men were working all night and had the line clear by the morning.
