EXPENDITURE FOR 1913.

The "annual, statement of the New Zealand drink bill for 1913, furnished by the temperance authorities, gives a total of £4,137,653, made up as follows : Spirits £1,753,538 Wines / £295,112 Imported Beer ... £89,763 New Zealand Beer ... £2,000,420 For'l9l2 the total was £4,081,162. The increase is £56,491, but, taken per head of the population, the amount last year was £3 14s-per head, against £2 i4s Hid in 1912.
The quantities per head work out on spirits at .78 gallons, wines .181, beer 9.209.
The: statement points out that the amount spent on liquor would pay the total railway expenditure and interest on the cost of railways, and would leave enough to pay the sick and funeral benefits of all the friendly societies in New Zealand. For a household of five persons, the average yearly expenditure is £lB 10s.
