While salvaging cargo, a heavy sea capsized a dory, and Captain Burns and Seamen Snow were thrown into the water. Another dory rescued them and the sea capsized it, three men then struggling in the whirling water. Assistance arrived, and another dory rescued the third man, but as they were dragging in Burns, the seas tore the dories apart and Burns sank. An excited crowd watched from the seashore, fearing that both rescuers would be overpowered by the heavy sea running.
