The Nairobi railway from the East Coast to Tanganyika lias been constructed for 780 miles. The German settlors are converting the barren Savannah en route into a prosperous colony. One hundred and eightyfive thousand serfs exist in German East Africa, but the numbers arc rapidly dwindling through death and emancipation. It is expected that serfdom will be extinct in fifteen years. Premature abolition would cost £280,000 in compensation to owners, besides leaving many serfs without means of maintenance.
