The annual report of the inspector of secondary schools shows that the net enrolment for the year was 6292 pupils. The inspector reports a growing demand for places in the High Schools. The Hfcy schools are overcrowded, necessitating a large expenditure on buildings in the near future. He'also notices that the supply of qualified teachers is unequal to the demand.
Mr Carmichael, Minister of Instruction, commenting on the report, thinks the growing interest in the High Schools is one of the healthiest signs that a vigorous and progressive education is fruitful. SENTENCED TO DEATH. '(Received 11.30 a.m.) • , Sydney, March 12. Richards has been sentenced to death for the Weewa murder. The jury recommended the accused to mercy on 'account of Wallace's extravagance.SMALLPOX CASES.

The Commonwealth Bank has turned the corner. For the last half-year it showed a profit of £I4OO.
WORLD'S WOOL.
Sydney, March 11
Lord Rochdale, after spending two months in Australia, largely devoted to attending wool sales, sails for New Zealand on Saturday. Interviewed, he said it appeared to him that Australia possessed such astounding prosperity thai the 'Government could attempt almost anything, from an econo mic standpoint. Regarding wool, he thinks there will e a permanent appreciation the world over, owing to more .people using it. With the lifting of the American tariff, the' increased demand from there would be a permanent factor in maintaining the present basis of prices.
