SWIMMING.
VISIT TO HAWERA. Seven members of the Stratford Club and two ladies visited Hawera for the carnival on Thursday evening. There was a nip in the air, and the men’s trip in a Cortland waggon was not all pleasure, but the hearty welcome in Hawera was some compensation. The Hawera, Club was favored with an excellent “gate,” but the “talent” did not like the cold air, and scratchings were numerous. Claringbold was in great form and won the 220yds Senior Cup race and the 50yds and KKlyds open races. In the 100yds race B. V. Kivell had 13 sec, but was unplaced, and he was also unplaced in the 50yds race, in which he had ssec. Misses M. Hignett (scr) and G. Songster (4sec) swam well in the 50yds ladies’ race, but Miss M. Mather (Gsec) was too good for them, and Miss Songster had to be content with second place and Miss Hignett with third place. Stratford’s polo team consisted of B. V. Kivell, H. Dewar, AV. Brady, A. L. Jones, Read, Kelly and Whittington. This, of course, y was nowise so strong a team as met Hawera in Stratford, and Hawera, likewise, put a better team, in the field than on the previous occasion. The Stratford men lacked speed and combination, and it was largely due to the soundness of Brady in goal that the score at the end of the match was only three to nil in Hawera’s favor. The season is now pretty well over, but next season it is certain that Strat- ' ford will specialise in polo, and will Ibe able to properly extend the best teams in the province. Coffee was provided during the carnival for competitors, and the StratIford men were entertained at supper before undertaking their chilly ride home.
