ROWAN SPORTS.
A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. The eighth annual meeting under the auspices of the Rowan Athletic Club was held in glorious weather on Thursday last. The ‘ground, one of the best in the district, and an ideal little place, being well sheltered, was kindly lent for the occasion by Messrs Galloway and Curry, who have the sincere thanks of the committee. The secretary carried out Ids arduous duties in an untiring manner, and was ably helped by a strong committee who left no stone unturned to make the eighth meeting the success it really was. Mr G. B. Hill, in acting as starter both for chopping and running, carried out his duties very creditably, getting the big fields away in quick time, to the entire satisfaction of the competitors. The booth was in the hands of Mr A. Mellow, and did fair business from the general public. The different events were well and closely contested, no runaway victories being very noticeable, which reflects credit on the handicapper (Mr Hansen). Mr J. E. Shewry, of Whanga, was the most successful competitor in the chopping events, he putting up some very fine performances; while W. 0. Jones, of Stratford, scooped the pool for running, ho winning the 100yds, 150yds and 220yds in good style. The Kaponga Band was in attendance, and livened up the proceedings. Children’s races were kept going during the day under the management of Mr P. Deegan. A dance was held in the. hall in the evening, and a large crowd came along.
