' George Harris, for pocket picking at Whangarei races, was sentenced to two years’ reformative treatment. PICTURE THEATRE FIRE. Taumanmui, February 23. Shortly after ton o’clock on Saturday night a fire broke out in the operating box in the Strand picture theatre. The operator burnt his hands in trying unsuccessfully to suppress the flames which rapi y spread. The audience was small, owing to a large number having already left, and dispersed quietly. The Attorney-Gen-eral, Mr Herdman, heartily welcomed Mr Hosting and- extended congratulations. The new judge briefly replied appreciatively. EXPORT APPLE TRADE. Nelson, February 23. The first South American apple shipment was sent away this week. The buyers could take a bundled thousand cases and prepared to | pay as much for New Zealand apples, especially Nelson, here as for Tasmanian landed at Monte Video, the reason being that the color of New Zealand apples makes them superior. Mr Sellers, Howland’s expert packer, on Saturday wrapped and packed 20J cases of apples in twelve hours. This is claimed to be a record, averaging seventeen per hour.
