FIRE BRIGADE FETE.

Thursday, .March 12th, will ho a red letter day for the Fire Brigade Carnival and monster fete which is jo he held at the Showgrounds on that day. An enthusiastic committee has met on several occasions, and nothing is to he spared to make t carnival a success. There will be cycle and running races for young and old, competitions of all kinds, j motor driving and horse jumping, besides numerous side shows, cocoanut ! shies, Jack Johnson, etc. There j will also ho a great baby show. A | feature which has been introduced is j the Alan with the Alagic Thumb, and j for the benefit of those who do not , know what this individual does, a few words on the matter will no doubt help. The man with the j magic thumb is going about the district slipping cards, hearing the words ‘•’One Guinea if yon catch me” into unsuspecting people’s pockets. If ' anybody happens to catch him and will say to him: “The Fire Brigade Carnival is to he held on the 12th March. Are you the Alan with the ! Alagic Thumb,” and if he answers i “Yes,” the person so questioning him gets the guinea. It is amusing to see how many innocent people are accused of being the Alan with the Alagic Thumb. One must not forget the maypole dances, drills, and marches, to be enacted by the school children. Some 60 girls and boys, under the able tuition of Aliss Papps, Mesdames Sharp and Aloon, are regularly practising these pretty movements, and the costumes will he a sight worth seeing.
