An ingenious New Zealander has invented a iicav explosive, Eruptite, which is so safe to handle that it is being carried on the railway as ordinary freight. We are informed that Eruptite does not become an explosive until a liquid is added to it: even then it cannot explode without detonation. During the past few months Eruptite has been tested by fanners, tree-planters and quarrymen, and is said to have proved itself as efficient and far cheaper than gelignite, without the dangers of that explosive. One special property that should commend Eruptite to farmers and orchardists is that in stump-clear-ing and sub-soiling it leaves a rich deposit of potash' in the ground. A booklet giving full particulars of Eruptite can be had free on application to the "Eruptite" Safety Explosive Company, Ltd., 30 Hunter Street, Wellington. "The Man with the Magic Thumb," in connection with the Fire Brigalft garden fete, started out on his work this morning, and quite a number of our town folks now have; the tickets upon them. Mr Magic Thumb escaped being challenged. To those of our readers who do not understand the condition of winning the guinea, prize we hereby print them: This man with the magic thumb has tickets which he places in persons' pockets when opportunity offers. The challenger must go to the person he or she supposes to be Mr Magic Thumb and repeat the following: "The Fire Brigade garden fete is on March 12th. Are you the man with the Magic Thumb?" These words must be the only words, and the challenger must have a ticket in their possession.
