Seaman Killed.
A WELLINGTON TRAGEDY. ALTERCATION IN PUBLIC-HOUSE. [Per Press Association.] Wellington, February 14. An altercation between some waterside workers and a number of men from the steamer Makarini was responsible for the death of Harry Gallagher, a trimmer of that vessel, through being felled by a blow last night. It appears that the men from the steamer were having a night ashore, and went to the Wellington Hotel, where they met some men from the waterfront. Trouble arose, and an objectionable word was made use of. Gallagher, it is said, demanded an explanation from the man using the language. At this stage, the barman interfered, and sent the men outside, j Then, it is alleged, a man named John | Albert Tucker struck Gallagher on the jaw, knocking him down. Gallagher struck his head heavily on the ground, and, as he didn't make any attempt to rise, it was perceived that the man i was seriously injured. Dr. Henry was I sent for, and when he arrived, a few | minutes he pronounced life extinct. The body was removed to the morgue, where an inquest will be held. It is understood that Gallagher was a married man and has a large family living in England. Tucker was arrested,, and will be charged at the Magistrate's Court tomorrow with the murder of deceased. THE ACCUSED ON REMAND. Wellington, February 16. John Alfred Tucker was charged nt the Magistrate's Court with murdering Harry Gallagher, trimmer on the Makarini, and was remanded till Wednesday.
