1 BATHING FATALITY AT FITZROY - i i’r u Phess Association, i A bathing fatality occurred at the Fitzroy beach yesterday, says the “Xews,” when Air AVilliam Herbert ■ Fenwick, of Fitzroy, a retired farmer,' * who had until comparatively recently ’ been residing at Tariki, was drown- ! ed. It appears that at about 4 p.m. yesterday, Air Fenwick, with his little daughter, went to the beach opposite the Fitzroy bathing sheds. AA hen he arrived there, a young man was already in the water, and Air Fenwick joined him. Very soon afterwards his companion heard a cry for help Horn Air Fenwick, who had been bathing a little distance away in what was apparently quite shallow water. He made an effort to rescue Alr'Fen- [ wick, who was being taken out x-o • sea by the backwash, which was then setting very strongly. He was, however, unable to render any assistance I to the unfortunate man, and only just got safely to the shore himself. There were other bathers within, call, and the body was ultimately brought to shore by the aid of a boy named Knight, who rode in the break--1 ers on a horse. | At about 5.30 Dr. AVnde arrived, and with the assistance of the Rev. H. T. Peat, used artificial for two hours without effect. As Far as he canid judge, the unfortunate man had been in the water for about half-au-h«ur. Deceased man was 41 I years of ago. He leaves a widow and I family.
