In connection the discussion going on regarding the Island fruit trade the Union Steam Ship Company has written to the Chamber of Commerce explaining the new itinerary of the steamers and claiming that the arrangement will place Wellington iii direct monthly communication with Fiji and the Navigator and Friendly groups of islands. The Chamber has replied,‘‘■•suggesting rtharlf* Whiff AiCSt meet the requirements of all parts of the Dominion if Wellington were made the first, port of call. By this means the South) Island would obtain longneglected recognition and the Christchurch and Dqnedin markets . receive shipments of perishable fruits in about seven days, as against an average of eleven days now.
