STRATFORD BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held last night, fivieut: The Mayor (Mr VV. P. lvirkwopd), and Crs. Moriaon, Boon, L»in'gie, iving, Ardeu, Thompson, i>redric and Masters. Cr. Richards apologised tor absence. WORKS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee reported: Your Committee beg to recommend as follows: That a footpath be constructed in jSeytori Street between Broadway and Juliet Street (.estimated cost £6 10s); that the hollow in Juliet Street be idled in (estimated cost with culvert £15); that the work of filling in hollow in Orlando, Street, as suggested by Mr Butler, be left undone.—Adopted. BAND COMMITTEE. The Band Committee reported that the instruments had been examined, (being found in good order. Five new instruments had heen purchased. They recommended that subsidy bo paid up to August last.—The report was *>' 4 * ,| »ted. OVERSEER. Th<i Overseer reported: Outlets to watercourses on the following private properties have been made at the expense of the owners—Mr C. Martin's, Cordelia Street, and Mr Valentine's, Swansea Road. A 15-inch concrete pipe culvert has been inserted on Pembroke Road. This culvert was extended through the racecourse, a distance of 51 feet. The cost of the work on the racecourse property is charged to the Stratford Racing Club. Noxious weeds have been cut on Borough reserves between Cordelia and Ariel Streets, south of the Pa tea River. Water-tables and footpaths on Fenton Street west and Juliet Street Central have been attended to. The crusher birirts liav* been erected. 110 cubic yards of material has been crushed. The whole of the crusher plant is working splendidly. The work of laying a sixinch water main from Regan Streei to.the Recreation Ground is in hand. Two .water services have been laid, and three premises connected to the Borough sewers.' The work of kerbing: and channelling will be put in hand to-morrow. ; ! dr. King! said the crushing plant' was going well. The Council should be congratulated on having such a plant, :and congratulations were due . toi wie. Soon the crusher could go on working, crushing stone for sale. He thought th> plant should remain stationary for at least twelve months. The buying of the crusher was a good investment -—on 1 -a par.with the road roller. ■■• , ' ABATTOIRS. The Manager of tiie Abattoirs reported: The. following stock, wer, slaughtered: Cows 91, heifers 26, oxen 2, calves 5, sheep 317, lambs 82, pigs 27. Slaughtering fees £65 0s 9d, paddock rents £lO. sale of blood and offal £4 10s; total £79 10s 9d. Stock condemned: 6 rows wholly, 5 partially; 1 heifer wholly, 2 partially; 3 pigs wholly, 1 lamb wholly. A man was employed for two days grubbing out noxious weeds and repairing fences. The rimu posts that were put in the fences at first are breaking up very fast. I would strongly recommend that A substantial post and rail fence be erected iii the main race from the entrance gate to the sheep fences. This length of rate is continually wanting patching up. BOROUGH INSPECTOR. The Borough Inspector reported: During January I impounded 27 heat] of cattle. Five persons were con victed for driving vehicles witboni lights, two for riding motor bicycles without lights, two for riding bicycle; without lights, and one for driving loose horses. I put in lights. GENERAL. R. W. Currin Applied for a plum', er's license.—Granted. , W. Shnrrock's tender at 3s 9d" p " yard was accepted for the supply ni 3500 yards of river stone. .1. G. Hannah applied for perfusion to remove earth from the side ol Romeo Street and Broadway South.Request refused. Mrs M. Hassall gave notice thai she intended to erect a fence between her property and the Council's r" ■ serve. —Referred to the Reserves Con. mittee with power to act. On the motion of Cr. Thompson i was decided that the Works Commit tee report to next meeting on th cost of forming Orlando Street south. between Romeo Street and Warwick Road. Tt was decided that fifty metal gutter crossings he purchased.—The Town Clerk reported that so far he had received sixteen offers to pay for the crossings if put in by the Council. The statement of receipts and ex-
penditure showed that the overdraft at December 31st was £2979 14b Bd. The expenditure to January 31st totalled £'BUS Os J()d, making a totatl debit of £3784 15s 6d. Tne receipts were £2339 6s Gd including rates £IBOB iy.s 8d), leaving a debit at January 31si of £1445 9s. In reference to the Council's letter regarding tlie electric light license, the Miniscer for Public Works wrote: "Your request that, in the event of
any petition being received by me in regard to the issue of a license to the Company, a copy thereof be forwarded to you so that your Council may know what is being done, is, to my mind, a reasonable one, and I will see. that it is complied with before any decision is come to therein.";—Received.
H. W: Kerr and Co., bakers, wrote in reference to an impending prosecution against them in respect of one of their carters driving on the footpath in Orlando Street South, near Warwick Road.—After discussion in committee it was decided to take no action.
The manager of the Wielaert-Pecho-tsch Concert Company forwarded the amount of the rent of the hall, and asked for a rebate, in view of the poor business.—lt was decided that no rebate could be granted.—Gunn, hypnotist, who hired the hall, but did not open, asked for a rebate.—Cr. Thompson moved that no rebate, be granted. He also entered a general protest against the custom of granting rebates.—The motion was carried.
Tli3 Overseer presented the following estimates of the work of kerbing and channelling Broadway South : Both sides from. Feilton Street to Opnnake Road, £174 6s; from Fenton Street -to river £ls los.—lt was decided that the work be put on next rear's estimates.
