BURCLARY AND THEFT.
[Per Press Association.] Auckland, February 9. The police arrested a man named Joseph Williams on a charge of breaking and entering the residence of J. T. Tukes, llomuora, and stealing goods to the value of £OO. HIS LAST JOKE. ( hristchurch, February 9. Jiving Sayles, a colored comedian, dropped dead in Gloucester Street at midday on Sunday, when he was joking with friends. He leaves a. wife who is now in Christchurch. ALLEGED INCENDIARISM. Gisborne, February 9. An attempt was made on night to burn down a butcher's shop at Tolago Bay. Sacks saturated with kerosene were discovered outside the building. * The. fire was . suppressed, but last night the building was again in flames, this time the sacks being placed inside the building. The owner is absent from the district. The man in, charge of the premises has been arrested. The building was destroyed. It was insured in the National office for £l9O.
HOTELKEEPER FINED.
Wangauui, February 9
At the Magistrate's Court to-day, Hojliday, licensee of Chavannes Hotel, was lined £1 for employing an unregistered barmaid. The defence was that it was an unintentional breach, the girl having been engaged at Auckland as a registered barmaid. Inquiries proved that she was unregistered.
