LEVEL CROSSINGS.

NEW nECULATIONS GAZETTED.

The latast Gazette notifies that new regulations and by-lws relating to level railway crossings have been drawn up as follow: — 1. No person shall drive or attempt to drive any vehicle other than a motoV vehicle, or animal, on any part of a public road where the same crosses over or upon a railway on the same.level, otherwise than at a walking pace, and every person shall, before crossing the lines of rail, comply with the directions upon the notice, boards, ''Stop, look out for the engine."

2. Xo person in charge of a motor vehicle or driving a motor vehicle on or along any road or street shall approach a railway level crossing within one hundred yards of such crossing without slackening speed to a rate not exceeding ten miles an hour; and every person in charge of or driv? ing a motor vehicle, shall stop before coming in contact with the railway line, and shall keep a vigilant lookout for approaching trains, and shall not attempt to cross the railway Hup unless the line is clear. 3. No person in charge of a motor vehicle or driving a motor vehicle on or along any road or street shall cross over any railway level crossing at a greater speed than ten miles an hour.

4. Any person who shall commit a broach of any of the foregoing bylaws, or shall fail to do any act in any such by-law directed to bo done by him, or shall do any act. which by any such by-law is directed not to be done by him, shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding £lO for each such breach or the failure to do or the doing of each such act* as aforesaid respectively; but if any such person is employed on or about the railway, and the by-law relates to his conduct, he shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding £1 for each breach, failure, or act respectively.

The new by-laws come into fore from to-day.
